| I've always liked Franz Bardon's Initiation into Hermetics, and
often recommended it. It's a bit turgid and hard to read, but if you are looking for ideas
for practices, especially basic disciplines to train yourself in "psychic
abilities", this book was a major source for occult exercises for a variety of
authors. I would consider this an old school approach, it takes it's worldview a little
too seriously, but at the same time it's a condensed gold mine of ideas and theories.
If you are going to experiment with ritual and the other mind-altering practices of
western magick, Initiation into Hermetics is not a bad place to start. It's exercises will
strengthen the skills of imagination, concentration, and the use of 'feelings of energy in
the body' that make the effects of ritual magick possible. I have less opinion about Franz Bardons other books, they all suffer from his difficult style of writing, and are an uneven mix of brilliance and obscurity. Bardon fans will have the patience to work thru it all and extract the good stuff, and there is a lot of good stuff. All of Franz Bardons books have tended to go in and out of print. You can always try the used book area at Amazon in hopes of finding a copy, or try eBay, I've gotten some great older books there. |
