An Amazon's customer's comment-- with which I agree...
Interesting read, but badly organized
The Magician's Workbook does offer some unique material on the basics of ceremonial magic,
but it is definitely not for a beginner. A lot of the "requirements" the author
has in this book, and in the next volume (Goetic Evocation), are way too specific for
practical use.
The book is badly organized in that there is no real
introduction to the material; the reader is simply thrown in mid-topic and expected to
know everything that is going on. This is a book for beginners but written for advanced
users, which seems to defeat the purpose.

| Sadly, most of the modern books on "magic" I find
to be derivative and unremarkable.... Of course, a good book on the topic would be very
difficult to write, and I doubt very much that one could find a publisher to do such a
book justice. Llewellyn, which publishes most such books these days, knows that it has to
appeal to the lowest common denominator to make a buck, and so it does; a successful
commercial strategy, but one which has turned the study of magick into something of a
fool's game. Not like when I started, and the only books which were available at all on
the subject were the classics, written earlier in the century (or late in the century
before) and reprinted due to the explosion of interest in the sixties. Too late for most
of the hippies, but just on time for a batch of young "occultists", including
myself, in the seventies. |
