Marija Gimbutas -- Some established
anthropologists decry her technique, her popular publishing, and her support of theories
of the so-called Kurgan Invasion of horse-riding aryans accredited with taking over
and destroying a peaceful matriarchal society circa 4000bc to 1800bc. However, she's a
good read, I can't see much in the way of credible attack on the paleoanthroploogy and
archaeology she did do, and maybe she's right about the idea of a
matriarchist-or-at-least-matrifriendly culture thru-out Asia, Africa, and Europe, dominant
from neolithic times until the establishment of 'modern' city-state empires which became
the dominant society on this planet in historical times. I
especially appreciated "Language of the Goddess", in which she argues that the
decorative motifs applied by craftspersons (largely argued to be female) to pottery,
statuary, and architecture were the origin of the concept of writing and the first
alphabets and heiroglyphic systems. I've been very interested in the question of the
origin of symbolic representation, especially numbers and alpha-bets, (as any esotericist
should be-- the heart of esoteric self-discovery is the realization that we are programmed
by our language, and can only think freely/fully when we begin to be able to think outside
of the domain of language!) and her book gave me some good ideas and sources.
