- Claudio Naranjo studied medicine, music, and philosophy in Chile, where he also was a resident at the University of Chile Psychiatric Clinic under Matte-Blanco. He taught the psychology of art at the Catholic University and social psychiatry at the School of Journalism, University of Chile, and served as Director of the Center for Studies in Medical Anthropology.

- In 1978, a vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank named R. Gordon Wasson, together with an eclectic group of scientists and scholars, published a book entitled The Road to Eleusis. The authors argued that the kykeon beverage consumed during the Eleusinian mysteries, the primary religious rite of Greco-Roman civilization, contained an hallucinogenic, or "entheogenic", barley fungus called claviceps purpurea.

- Imprisoned in Auschwitz for two years, the writer remained captive in nightmares to the horrors of Auschwitz. In 1976 he sought help from Professor Jan Bastiaans, the Dutch psychiatrist who first recognized Concentration Camp Syndrome and successfully treated camp survivors with a therapy involving doses of LSD. Shivitti is a memoir of that experience. MAPS has reprinted the Preface to the new edition of Shivitti with permission from the publisher.
