What has happened, this past century, is that authors of self-help material have extracted from the esoteric and occult materials pretty much all of the really practically useful "techniques", the mental technologies hidden and fossilized in the esoteric traditions. "Think and Grow Rich" is the classic example of this; Napoleon Hill took the whole basic regime of occult magic, images, word magic, invocations, purifications, (stripped down, sanitized, and redefined) etc, and focused it towards the stated goal of "getting rich", and produced this classic of self help literature.
