Maurice Nicoll is certainly the sanest and arguably the most brilliant of the many thinkers and writers that have come from the G.I. Gurdjieff stream of esoteric material, get his books while you can, they seem to go in and out of print. His “Psychological Commentaries on the Teachings of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky” is a goldmine of the best thinking and practices that the Gurdjieff lineage used- his writing on Justification and Identification is really worth the read, for example. His smaller books are interesting too, for instance the esoteric christianity of books like The New Man and The Mark had a strong effect on my personal approach to religion. Maurice Nicoll was a great light from an earlier and more innocent age.

In many ways, this is the most valuable book on my shelves!

If you want to preserve your illusions, don’t buy this book. But, if you want the true and inside story on what was really happening with all the characters who wrote the books, built the organizations, and orchestrated the events which became alternative spirituality in America, this is the book to read. It has my highest recommendation!

Ken Wilber is probably the most effective and original writer on esoteric philosophy, esoteric psychology, consciousness, and self-development of the last ten years. And one of the most prolific. If you aren’t following his arguments you can’t claim to be well-based in the modern philosophy of consciousness. He can be a difficult read, and tends to use a lot of technical jargon, so be prepared. I would say “A Theory of Everything” is his best overall introduction, it’s a recent book that reviews and restates his ideas. I am featuring his books here in the Telesterion esoteric bookstore, I do recommend reading Ken Wilber if you haven’t yet, and for those who are most familiar with his older books, I suggest trying some of the newer material, his ideas and attitudes has evolved considerably, and his new ideas are interesting.

This is the Telesterion Bookstore, which will always be under construction. New books and areas have recently been added.By exploring these links you will be able to immediately learn about (and buy if you choose) some of the most useful and important books ever written for persons studying and practicing Self-Development and consiousness psychologies. From this article:

His argument is based on the fact that for more than 99 per cent of human evolutionary history, we have lived as hunter-gatherer communities surviving on our wits, leading to big-brained humans. Since the invention of agriculture and cities, however, natural selection on our intellect has effective stopped and mutations have accumulated in the critical “intelligence” genes.

“I would wager that if an average citizen from Athens of 1000BC were to appear suddenly among us, he or she would be among the brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions, with a good memory, a broad range of ideas and a clear-sighted view of important issues,” Professor Crabtree says in a provocative paper published in the journal Trends in Genetics.

“Furthermore, I would guess that he or she would be among the most emotionally stable of our friends and colleagues. I would also make this wager for the ancient inhabitants of Africa, Asia, India or the Americas, of perhaps 2,000 to 6,000 years ago,” Professor Crabtree says.

“The basis for my wager comes from new developments in genetics, anthropology, and neurobiology that make a clear prediction that our intellectual and emotional abilities are genetically surprisingly fragile,” he says.
